In the picturesque setting of Bird-in-Hand, PA, from September 14-17, 2023, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, came alive with the vibrant colors of dozens of hot air balloons and spectators from across the country. This year’s festival not only showcased the unique beauty of Amish Country, but also brought together thousands of guests, from balloon pilots and vendors to locals, tourists, and volunteers from far and wide. 

The Rich History of the Lancaster Balloon Festival

The Lancaster Balloon Festival is one of the many historical attractions in Lancaster, PA, that locals and tourists look forward to each year. Since 2010, the festival has drawn thousands of spectators to the historic site and originally began through a partnership sparking from the Bird-in-Hand Marathon in an event called Run, Ride, and Soar. 

Fortunately, both events have grown to a point where they can no longer be held simultaneously at the Bird-in-Hand location. Today, the festival partners with Garden Spot Village and local businesses to bring together balloon pilots, some of the best local vendors, and musical performances that set new records each year. 

The Spectacle of Mass Balloon Ascensions!

One of the most awe-inspiring moments of the festival was undoubtedly the mass balloon ascension. Picture this: dozens of colorful balloons dotting the sky, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. Spectators were treated to a mesmerizing display as the balloons gracefully ascended, turning the Lancaster sky into a canvas of vibrant hues. 

Spectators got up close and personal with the balloons during the launches and the enchanting Glow event. For those attending the festival, getting to talk with the pilots and hear the unique stories behind each balloon is a favorite experience. 

Live Music all Weekend Long

The festival’s stage was alive with music that resonated across the rolling hills of Lancaster all weekend long. Bobby Law and The Late Show, an accomplished musician, took center stage, claiming victory in the Late Show’s I105 WIOV Battle of the Bands in June 2022. 

On Friday, the crowd swayed to the tunes of Fast Lane, a headline act with a notable performance at the Fallfest Country Music Festival, drawing over 10,000 people. Both performances were a hit, allowing guests to jam out while watching the beautiful balloons around them. 

Family Friendly Activities and Entertainment

Families were treated to various festival events and activities, including bounce houses, a corn maze, hayrides, and a whimsical Balloon Walk, ensuring that there was something for everyone of all ages throughout the weekend. The entertainment continued with reptile showcases and other family-friendly activities from Friday through Sunday, featuring the Forgotten Friends Reptile Sanctuary and various other performers.

PA Dutch Delights and Food Truck Feasts!

One of the festival’s highlights was undoubtedly the culinary journey it offered. Attendees were treated to the delectable offerings of local food vendors, and the best part? Little to no lines! From home-style dishes from Bird-in-Hand Restaurant to the savory delights of local food trucks, the festival turned into a food lover’s paradise.

As the sun set on each festival day, the glow of the balloons was complemented by the glow of satisfied faces enjoying the culinary delights of Lancaster. The festival not only provided an unforgettable visual experience but also delighted the taste buds of all who attended.
